Outlander TV Series • 2013

Based on the historical time travel novels by Diana Gabaldon, this exciting British-American TV drama series started filming in Scotland in 2013. Working closely with two award winning costume designers, Terry Dresbach and Glenne Campbell, I was asked to research and knit 1940's garments for two of the main characters - Claire and Frank Randall. Both characters required bespoke sleeveless vests/slipovers, that fitted the designers’ brief for style and authenticity. Original vintage hand knitting patterns, designed for 3-ply yarns, were an interesting challenge to adapt to suit modern yarn weights. Claire's vest was hand knitted with the original cable pattern altered to extend all the way to the shoulders, while Frank’s vest fabric was created on a hand-powered vintage machine with the addition of hand knitted rib detail for a more authentic feel.

A range of Gunniston caps and textured panels were designed and hand knitted to accompany the 18th century period costumes. It was really exciting to be involved in the pre-production stage of this globally successful TV series that combined my hand knitting expertise with my newly acquired machine knitting skills.
