Leonardo da Vinci • 2019
I have always admired the work of polymath Leonardo da Vinci, so was delighted to be commissioned by Craft Design House to create a design for their Leonardo da Vinci Collection. The design, inspired by his work, would be exhibited at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to coincide with the touring exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing celebrating the 500 year anniversary of his death. There were so many possible areas for inspiration for my design but I was never going to re-create the Mona Lisa in knitted form. I decided to focus on the areas that we have in common - we’re both left-handed, write backwards and love repetition and geometry. The result is my Golden Ratio design, incorporating 1.618, the value of the Golden Ratio proportion, written forwards and backwards, and its mathematical symbol Phi. For this design collaboration we chose three colour combinations for long scarves and each had a fine golden contrast colour trim. You can order this design in your ideal size and colour direct from me.
